About Sijua

Located in Dhanbad district, Sijua is a small town in the Indian state of Jharkhand. Considering the population of the area the Government has denoted the place as a census town. Being a part of the Coal Capital of the country, Dhanbad, the principal attribute of the area is the number of coal reserves available here. Some of the greatest corporate names of the country like Tata Steel and BCCL have their offices in Sijua.

Geography of Sijua

Located at 23.78°North Latitudes and 86.32°East Longitudes, average elevation of Sijua is 181 meters or 593 feet. Sijua is encircled by Jharia block on the southern side, Raghunathpur block on the north, Govindpur block in the east and Baliapur block on the western part. The nearby districts of Sijua are Giridh, Bokaro, Dumka of Jharkhand and are is also close to Purulia district of West Bengal. There are no rivers or water channels that flow through the village. However one can find Jamunia Nadi flowing at a distance of 21.9km from Sijua and Gobai Nadi at a distance of 32km. The nature of soil is lateritic in nature and not much productive for agricultural produce.

Climate of Sijua

Subtropical humid climate along with tropical dry and wet climate characterizes the climatic condition of Sijua. From the end of March to the mid of June the hot and humid weather of summer prevails with temperature ranging from 25°C to 39°C. Then comes the monsoon months and stretches till mid of October. The highest precipitation can be seen during the month of August. The winter climate is however much pleasant with cool breeze flowing and the temperature ranging between 11°C to 25°C. The winter months stretches from November to February.

As per 2001 census the total population of the district is recorded at 29,797 persons. Among this around 54% are male inhabitants and 46% consists of female inhabitants. Around 14% of the total population consists of children from 0-6 years of age. The local language used by the inhabitants of this village is Hindi and Santali. The literacy level of Sijua town is marked at 62%. The average male literacy stands at 71% and female literacy at 50% only. There are notable ICSE and CBSE schools in the area.

Culture of Sijua

Sijua is a place which consists of multi cultural inhabitants. Hindu, Muslims, Christians, Jains, and along with local tribals reside in this part of Jharkhand. Among Hindus also there are presence of people from multiple cultures like Bengali, Gujrati, Punjabi etc which helps in mingling of several communities. The major festivals celebrated here include Holi, Diwali, Eid Muharram, Gurupurnima, Sarhul and Christmas. The festivals are enjoyed with folk songs and music much popular here. Ghatwari and Santhal dance are the local folk dance of the area. Jhumar and udasi are popular folk songs. Rice , lentil, sweets and wheat products are the staple food of this region.

Economy of Sijua

The main occupation of the people of Sijua is coal mining. As mentioned there are branded coal companies based near the village and majority of the inhabitants are employed under these companies only. Apart from this the other source of employment in this region is the Indian railways which is a major employment generator in te region. Agriculture and farming is quite less in Sijua village. Mostly cultivation of crops is done on renfed areas and much small in quantity. The major crops sown here includes paddy , maize, blackgram and green gram. There are cultivation of horticulture vegetables and fruits like cauliflower, cabbage, potato, onion, mango, guava, banana etc.

Tourist Attractions in Sijua

Sijua is mainly a coal mining area and the tourism options in the village are very limited. Apart from the scenic view of the Chotonagpur plateau, the greenery spread across and the wonderful climate in the winter days, there are no sightseeing spots based in Sijua. However one can visit the various nearby tourist spots like Bokaro steel city and Maithan at a distance of 42km or Jamtara which lies only 49km away from Sijua. A visit to Giridh district at a distance of 50km is also entertaining.

Transportation in Sijua

Transportation in Sijua is one of the best qualities of the town. The nearness to Dhanbad Railway track which is based at a distance of 12km from Sijua helps travelers reach the destination easily. Even the village is closer to Katras which is only 4kms away. A similar good connectivity is visible through roadways. There are three major railway connections from Sijua and they are Sijua (under the Dhanbad-Chandrapura line under the Dhanbad Railway Division, East Central Railway), Tetulmari (under the CIC section of Dhanbad Railway Division, East Central Railway)and Tata-Sijua(under the Adra railway division, South Eastern Railway).Apart from Railways there are good bus connectivity two from the two major cities based nearby. JNURM buses are available in Dhanbad Katras route which travels through Sijua. For traveling the local distance one can have auto rickshaws which is quite common here are provides cheap rides too.
